Zebra Workcloud Sync

2023-24

Workcloud Sync is the culmination of over 100+ products acquired by Zebra Technologies throughout 2019-2020. As the lead product designer, I collaborated closely with research, product, sales, and marketing to develop a cohesive strategy to pilot a net new product in just 6 months. The platform consolidated execution, collaboration, and enablement into one connected ecosystem serving retail, healthcare, transportation, and logistics.

McDonald's Identity System

Identity systems aren't just about authentication—they're about relationship building. Every identification moment is an opportunity to reinforce value, build habit, and create social capital.

Workcloud Sync is an identity-centric data model where employee identity - not just device - determines experience, enabling seamless transitions between desktop, tablet, mobile, and wearables throughout a shift.

impact

Our goal was to provide an experience for frontline workers that removed the complexity of multiple apps, creating a seamless integration across data systems, to help them execute faster on the floor.

process

01. what's our business, who's our customer?

Led a cross-functional workshop to map the entire 100+ product portfolio, distilling everything down to three core themes: Execution, Collaboration, and Enablement. These became the north star principles that every design decision mapped back to.

02. ideate, push the boundaries, but ground it in real needs

Developed jobs-to-be-done storyboards illustrating how warehouse workers, retail staff, and healthcare teams would use Workcloud Sync across contexts. These stories became the backbone of both the design rationale and the sales narrative.

03. refine, refine, refine
with all of the technical constraints

The WS50 wearable became a forcing function. Instead of treating it as an afterthought, I designed for the smallest screen first.

This constraint forced ruthless prioritization:
Voice-first interactions (hands often full)
Glance-friendly UI (worn during physical work)
Context-aware intelligence (high-noise environments)

Understanding what features were crucial on a tiny device helped streamline mobile and tablet experiences as well.

04. design 🤝 sales
creating a narrative that sells

We designed and sold in parallel. Prototypes moved directly into sales calls and conference demos, validated by real customer feedback before committing development resources.

Weekly syncs with sales informed design iterations. The rigor that went into getting the story right early helped us successfully launch to eager customers.

identity as the enabler - key features

unified task management

Managers need to create and assign tasks, but workers need dead-simple execution on any device.

Tasks are tied to worker identity, accessible from any device with appropriate detail level. Workers can start on tablet, execute on a wearable, and review on mobile as needed.

intelligent zebra companion (AI/ML)

Zebra Companion suggests next actions based on who you are and where you are.

- Surfaces relevant information proactively
- Enables natural language queries for hands-free scenarios
- Learns from patterns to reduce friction

cross-team visibility

Real-time task progress, performance metrics, and achievements—with privacy controls. Workers control what's shared; managers see patterns without micromanaging.Managers need to create and assign tasks, but workers need dead-simple execution on any device.

voice-first design

In warehouse/retail/healthcare environments, hands are often full. Voice interaction isn't a nice-to-have—it's essential. Natural language commands with audio + visual feedback, transcriptions, and suggested actions.
